The Rogers Royals had a strong Friday and a shaky Saturday at the St. Michael-Albertville Invitational.
In pool play Friday, Rogers won 25-19, 25-13 over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrose, and 25-16, 25-23 over Roseville Area.
Competing in the championship bracket on Saturday, the Royals went 0-3. Wayzata beat them 25-16, 25-11; STMA beat them 25-20, 25-16; and Delano beat them 25-21, 21-25, 15-6.
“We played solid volleyball yesterday,” said coach Joyelle Knoblach. “We had a lot of excitement and energy, and nobody was making mistakes. We were putting the ball (in open spaces). We had effective serving. Today, not so good. But we were playing different (level of) opponents today, too.”
Rogers is 11-14 for the season, with a majority of the players underclassmen and first-year starters including an eighth-grade hitter.
“We’re getting some experience for our younger players,” said the coach. “A lot of people are getting a lot of touches and we are getting smarter about things. We just need to get some confidence back.”
The Royals will play at Monticello on Tuesday.
