Volleyball: Elks 2-3 at STMA tournament

Elk River lost three of five matches at the St. Michael-Albertville tournament Friday and Saturday, including four with their top hitter sidelined.

In pool play Friday, the Elks beat Moorhead 17-25, 25-19, 15-12 and lost to Wayzata 25-14, 25-12. Against Moorhead, Kara Ziemer knocked down 12 kill and Brittni Gillquist made 11 digs while serving 9-for-9 with two aces.

Zeimer aggravated her turned ankle in the first match and didn’t play the rest of the tournament.

In the 9th through 18th place bracket on Saturday, Roseville Area beat the Elks 25-18, 25-18. The Elks edged Totino-Grace 26-24, 19-25, 15-12. In the final match Delano beat the Elks 25-22, 16-25, 15-13, scoring the last six points to erase a 13-9 Elk lead.

The Elks (13-7) will host No. 3 ranked Blaine when they resume NWSC play Tuesday.
