Football: Thunder rule second half, beat Mora 44-8

The Zimmerman Thunder went into halftime a bit miffed that they led the Mora Mustangs by just six points.

But no matter. The Thunder took care of business in the third quarter and pummeled the visitors 44-8 on Friday evening at home.

Senior quarterback Cam Korlath rushed 12 times for 132 yards and passed for 81  as the Thunder snapped a two-game skid and improved to 4-2. Noah Lunning and Jeff Mueller each ran for two touchdowns.

“Our offensive and defensive lines had a great night,” said Thunder coach Tom Kish. “They really controlled the line of scrimmage.”

The Thunder led 14-8 at the break, with miscues including a safety on a snap over Korlath’s head in the shotgun, a fumble deep in Mora territory, and a dropped TD pass late in the half. Another fumble in the third quarter stopped another drive.

“Things like that are not acceptable,” said Kish. “Our offense was still too sloppy.”

The Thunder busted loose with three touchdown drives in the third quarter capped by Lunning, Mueller and Korlath runs.

Collin Ashley, who carried nine times for 63 yards and caught two passes for 45, capped the scoring with a two-yard run in the final quarter.

Kish said Korlath ran for big yardage with Mora focusing hard on Mueller, the fullback, who rushed 11 times for 60 yards. Lunning ran for 50 yards on nine totes.

Mueller, at linebacker, led with eight tackles.

Justin Mantell scored the TD for Mora (1-5) on a six-yard run in the second quarter.

Alex MacGregor, Zimmerman’s talented kicker, was 4-for-4 on extra points but, hobbled by a pulled hamstring, has not kicked off the last three games. He was not  able to kick PAT’s after the last two touchdowns. The Thunder went for two each time and  made them (Mueller run, Korlath pass to Trey Gabrielson) to complete a 6-for-6 night on PATs.

The Thunder will host Orono (3-3), a non-conference foe but section rival, next Friday.
