Goals by Grant Tesdahl and Jake Holbrook lifted Elk River-Zimmerman to a 2-0 victory over Rogers on Saturday, in a game both teams saw as evenly-played.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game and we would have to get up for it,” said Aaron Lindquist, co-head coach of the Elks. “We had our chances and there were two or three shots we didn’t capitalize on. They had their fair share of chances too, and luckily a couple of ours went in.”
Rogers had one strong shot (by Mike Biah) that hit the cross bar, and two by Mitch Steeves on corner kicks that came close.
“We had a good game, a pretty even game. We both had chances and they capitalized on a couple,” said Chris Miller, Rogers coach.
Tesdahl scored on a cross from the end line, set up by Jake Salem. Holbrook scored on a rush to the net, off a pass from Trevor Reibel. Both came in the second half.
Goalkeepers Cody Christ of the Elks and C.J. Rich of the Royals came through with some tough saves.
“Cody had to make a couple good point-blank saves. He had nice reactions,” said Lindquist.
“I thought our goalie was stupendous,” said Miller. “Theirs did a good job, too.”
Both teams play in Section 8AA so the game had seedings implications. The Elks (7-5-1 overall) are 4-1 in the section. Rogers (3-9-1 overall) is 0-5-1.
The Elks will play at Champlin Park on Tuesday. Rogers will host Monticello on Tuesday.
