Soccer: Elk boys can’t hold lead, fall to Cougars 3-2

A late surge by the Centennial Cougars sent the Elk River-Zimmerman soccer team to a 3-2 defeat at home on Thursday evening.

“We blew it in the last seven or eight minutes,” said coach Tom Olson. “We did not play smart.”

The Elks led at the half on goals by Mitch Peterzen and Joey Benz. The lead stood until the clock edged past the 70th minute.

Centennail (4-3-1 conference, 5-6-2 overall) tied the score with a goal on the regular flow of the game, then took the lead on free kick Alex Moua.

“We kept giving them free kicks. It must have been about four of them,” said Olson.

The Elks dipped to 2-5-1 in conference and 6-5-1 overall.

The Elks have a doubleheader at Rogers on Saturday, boys at 11 a.m. and girls at 1 p.m.
