St. Cloud Cathedral had hat tricks from two players and defeated the Zimmerman Thunder 7-0 on Tuesday in St. Cloud.
“We were given a clinic on how effective short passing can be when it is done correctly,” said Thunder coach Jeff Downing. “Cathedral caught us flat and sloppy, just one of those situations that come up from time to time. As a team there was very little done well but each player was giving good effort.”
Sophie Varner and Ellie Engel scored three goals each for the Crusaders, who share the Granite Ridge lead with Princeton with a 6-0-1 conference record, 7-2-1 overall. Varner got them started with two goals 58 seconds apart in the 11th minute. Sarah Leighton had the seventh goal on a header.
Abbie Canton was in goal for Zimmerman and faced 23 shots from inside the box. She was able to stop 15 without giving up an second chances.
The Thunder, 2-5 in conference and 4-8 overall, host Mounds Park Academy on Wednesday, 5 p.m.
