Enjoying a rare scoring binge, led by Joey Benz and Jake Holbrook, the Elk River-Zimmerman soccer team cruised 6-2 over the Osseo Orioles at home Wednesday evening.

Benz booted two goals in the first half, which ended 2-2, when Osseo had a brisk wind at their backs.

Benz, who had one previous goal this year, got the hat trick early in the 51st minute. He took a perfect lead pass from Jake Salem that set  him up one-on-one with the goalie, and drilling the ball just inside the far post.

Josh Chuba made it 4-2 on a header set up by Benz.

Then Holbrook, a stocky senior forward with no previous varsity goals, made a pair of highlight-reel-type shots a minute apart. The first was a looper over the goalie that twisted in the strong tailwind. The second was a bullet from 25 yard out that skipped pas the goalie.

The four-goal burst  took less than eight minutes.

Aaron Bergh had both goals for Osseo (0-5-1 conference, 1-6-2 overall).

The Elks, who had 11 goals in nine  games previously, improved to 2-3-1 in conference, 4-4-2 overall.

The Elks will play at Robbinsdale Armstrong on Thursday.
