The Princeton Tigers took charge in the last 32 minutes and pulled away from the Zimmerman Thunder 5-0 on Tuesday evening in Princeton.
Gabby Henke and Bridget Walters scored two goals each and Alana Mattson had the other for the Tigers (4-0-1 conference, 6-2-2 overall), who share the Granite Ridge lead with St. Cloud Cathedral.
“The Thunder played a solid 48 minutes of the 80 minute game,” said Zimmerman coach Jeff Downing, “and that is just not going to produce a favorable outcome against a team with the depth of talent like Princeton.”
Walters capitalized on a poorly played ball by Zimmerman to score in the first minute but that was the lone score of the half. The other goals came in the latter part of the match.
Zimmerman (2-3 conference, 4-6 overall) managed just three shots and only one was a true threat. However, the Thunder “continue showing improvement in their ball control against the top team in the Granite Ridge Conference,” said the coach.
He added that a very solid defensive performance was turned in by Kristen Connelly was good to see. “She seems to be back to 100 percent from an early season injury that was slow to heal.”
The Thunder will host St. John’s Prep on Thursday.
