Soccer: Rogers boys tie first-place Buffalo 1-1

Isaac Aanerud scored a rare throw-in goal as the Rogers Royals battled to a 1-1 tie with the first-place Buffalo Bison on Tuesday in Buffalo.

Aanerud, junior midfielder, made strong throw-in that grazed another player and wound up in the net, with a defender scrambling after the ball in vain, in the 15th minute. Aanerud has six goals in the last four games.

Buffalo tied the score about 10 minutes later, and there would be no more scoring.

The Bison goalkeeper made a big save late in the match when Mike Biah and Nahome Biniam brought the ball swirly up the field with Biniam making a strong shot which the goalie deflected with his fingers.

“Both teams played hard and the game was really physical,” said Rogers coach Chris Miller. “Buffalo is a very aggressive team. They are at the top of our conference so this was a good result for us.”

Buffalo (5-4-1 overall) came into the match 4-0-0 in the Mississippi 8.

Rogers, now 2-3 in conference and 3-6-1 overall, will play at St. Michael-Albertville on Thursday.
