Elk River placed third among 16 teams in the Sauk Rapids-Rice Invitational on Saturday.
The Elks (9-2) beat Rocori and Little Falls, lost to Melrose in the semifinals, and beat Annandale for third place. Each was by 2-0. (Scores and stats are not available at this posting).
The Elks’ two senior leaders spent significant time on the bench as Kara Ziemer is dealing with a foot injury and played about half the time and Janell Finkbeiner sat part of the day with a wrist issue. A third senior starter, Austyn Beese, is sidelined with an eye infection.
“We’re calling ourselves the ‘walking wounded,’ so it was good to have all the matches just going two games,” said Elk coach Pam Gothe. “We don’t have any games this week so that will help us recover.”
The Elks are idle until Sept. 25 when they play at Forest Lake.
