Jamie Pensinger delivered three goals as the Zimmerman Thunder defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 5-2 at home Saturday, and with that win they passed last season’s total already.
Cami Bond and Amanda Sahr also scored as the Thunder opened up a 5-0 lead before the Golden Bears (0-8) scored twice.
With three straight wins, the Thunder girls “continue to develop confidence in their game,” said coach Jeff Downing.
Their record is 4-5, surpassing last year’s 3-14-1 ledger.
Playing patiently to set up the ideal chance to score at the outset, the Thunder didn’t puncture the net until the 23rd minute as Pensinger out jumped opponents for a header off a high cross pass from Camilla Johansson from the right to the center.
Bond ended a well-timed run in the 33rd minute with a finishing touch on the end of another Johansson cross for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Just 12 seconds into the second half, Sahr took a bounding ball from Salo and scored. The Thunder quickened the pace and Pensinger scored in the 43rd minute, running under a free kick by Salo from 30 yards.
In the 56th minute, Pensinger headed in her hat trick goal off of another high ball by Salo that led her just right.
The Golden Bears made some advances of their own and Thunder defenders conceded eight corner kicks while goalkeeper Justine Charles racked up 10 saves.
The visitors scored in the 64rd minute as Thunder defenders failed to clear a ball hear the goal and Paige Maki scored while colliding with Charles. The Thunder used backup goalie Meg Jacobson the final 16 minutes and the Golden Bears scored in the 79th minute.
The Thunder will play at Princeton on Tuesday.
