A benefit for Sandy Atkinson will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Elk River American Legion, 525 Railroad Drive N.W., Elk River.
Sandy, who grew up in Zimmerman and graduated from Elk River High School in 1991, has IgA nephropathy, an uncommon form of chronic kidney disease. She was diagnosed 12 years ago and her kidney function has steadily declined. She now is in Stage 5, or end stage renal disease. Sandy is on the transplant list, but is expected to be on this waiting list for five years or more. She will start dialysis in the next few months.
She has been mostly unable to work for the past 2.5 years so her past bills are mounting and her future bills are daunting.
The benefit will include a pig roast ($10), hot dogs ($5), sand dollars for Sandy ($1), music, a bake sale and silent auction. Bidding for the silent auction begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. (you need not be present).
Silent auction item donations, baked good donations and time and talent donation are all appreciated and accepted by contacting Denise Atkinson, 763-856-4290. Financial donations also can be sent to US Bank in care of the Sandy Atkinson Benefit Fund.
