Tennis: Salhen tops Scheevel in title match of Fall Classic

Eric Salhen emerged as champion of the Fall Classic on Saturday, beating Rogers coach Nick Scheevel in the finals, 6-3, 6-4.

Sahlen, a Coon Rapids native and recent U of M graduate, went 4-0 in the 16-player field.

Scheevel reached the finals with three wins, including 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 to Elk River coach Randy Ronning in the semifinals. Ronning then placed third with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mike Hayes. Joey Evavold won consolation.

The mixed doubles champions were Lisa and Sam Scheevel, beating Abby and Steve Kreklau in the finals 10-8. There were eight entrants.

Paul Bates and Brett Fedema of St. Cloud won open doubles, beating Ronning and Jeremy Thompson 6-1, 6-2 in the finals. Placing third among eight teams were Andy MacArthur of Robbinsdale and Mike Hayes of Blaine.

Lisa Scheevel and Stephanie Brown won “A” doubles, beating Big Lake brothers Cole and Trevor Grasgko in the finals 6-2, 6-3. Among eight entrants, Kyle Syverson and Derek Brown of Osseo placed third.
