Cross country: Elk girls 3rd, boys 8th in opener at Apollo

The Elk River girls placed third among nine teams and the boys were eighth among 11 teams on Monday in the season-opening St. Cloud Apollo Invitational.

The girls race was close as Coon Rapids won with 52 points, followed by St. Cloud Cathedral with 59 and the Elks with 60.

Rachel Eickhoff of Cathedral won individually with a time of 14:54.

For the Elks, Rachel Ness was fifth (15:35), Anna Haugen 10th (15:53), Kennedy Warner 13th (16:05), Maria Brown 15th (16:07), and Chelsea Schlegel 17th (16:13).

Wayzata was the boys team winner and Isaiah Barlow of Hutchinson was first in 15:34.

For the Elks, Breck Hickman placed 28th (17:26), Ryan Trapp 36th (17:49), Nathan Webster 39th (17:56), Sam Gearou 43rd (18:04) and Josh Gearou 58th (19:09).

Next meet is the Hopkins Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 6.
