Swimming: Elks 3rd in NWSC Relays to open season

The Elk River-Rogers-Zimmerman swimmers placed third among 11 teams in the Northwest Suburban Conference Relays, the season opener, on Thursday in Coon Rapids.

Centennial outscored perennial conference champion Maple Grove to win the meet.

Top Elk finishes were second place in the butterfly and 200 freestyle races. The had free third-places and two fourth-places. See summary below.

Coach Colleen Killpatrick said her team finished right where she thought they would.

“The girls swam, well especially for a week  and a half of practice,” said Killpatrick. “We are a little rusty in some areas, such as the relay starts and turns, but that will come with some more meets.”

The Elks have a large group of young swimmers including 30 who are new to the program.

“I thought our 8th, 9th and 10th graders showed some promise,” said Killpatrick, “and our regulars did well also.”

The Elks will swim at Stillwater on Tuesday evening.
