The annual Elk River Wrestling Golf Extravaganza that drew about 100 players last Friday had as special guests the 1981 state runner-up team.
The event generated about $9,000 for the Elk junior high wrestling program, stated chairman Rick Roche.
Eleven members of the 1981 team were on hand, plus coach Mike Dahlheimer.
“We wanted to do something different to get more people to play, so we decided to invite the 1981 team that was the first from Elk River to go to state,” said Paul Nelson, current head coach who was an Elk JV freshman that year. “It was great to so so many of them come.”
Jim Hirt traveled the farthest; he lives in Tennessee. Others who made were Jim Jorgenson (98-pound state champ that year, and 7-0 at state), Jim Clarke (still active at 48 in mixed martial arts competition), Matt Leshovsky (former Rogers coach), Jeff Vasseuer (third in state at heavyweight that year, still holds Elk pins record), Jim Staffenhagen, Leon Ebner, Loren Ebner, Dave Barsody, Tim Stolke, and Mike Hanlon.
Two teams tied for first place, each shooting 14-under-par. The team of Jim Fritz, Brad Boston, Paul Dilley, and Jon Grunewald placed first after a playoff. The runner-up team was Tyler Hemmesch, Nick Donaldson, Brad Wenland, and Jake Berger.
