Weiler to serve as an Aquatennial captain

An Elk River teacher has been selected as a captain  with the Minneapolis Aquatennial.

Sonja Weiler has been a marketing teacher at Elk River High School for 13 years.

She also is one of the long-time organizers of the Anoka Royal Ambassa-dors Program.

Aqua-tennial captains are appointed to serve a one-year term as ambassadors through the state and region. They are responsible for escorting the princesses and in the absence of the commodore, the Queen of the Lakes.

Weiler, meanwhile, serves on multiple leadership committees throughout the Elk River Area School District and at the state level. Currently, she is the DECA adviser at Elk River High School and chairperson for the Minnesota DECA Board of Directors. She has been recognized as “Teacher of the Year” by Minnesota DECA (2005) and the Minnesota’s Association of Career and Technical Administrators (2009).

Weiler is also active with the Anoka Halloween Festival, where she has been a member for the past 12 years. Weiler helps lead the festival’s ambassador program. Weiler herself served as community ambassador for the festival in 1997.
