Baseball: Pioneers rally, tip Rogers 10-9 in 10 innings in playoff opener
The Elk River Pioneers rallied from a 7-2 deficit to edge the Rogers Red Devils 10-9 in 10 innings, sparked by Jim Brown, in their Section 8B playoff opener on Saturday in Coon Rapids.
Brown threw 4 2/3 shutout innings in relief, and knocked in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the last of the 10th inning. Mike Lorden and Aaron Pipenhagen singled and an intentional walk loaded the bases before Brown’s fly ball scored Lorden.
The Pioneers (9-12) will complete pool play Sunday at 7 p.m. against top-seeded Coon Rapids. The six-team tournament resumes Tuesday evening for those not eliminated.
Rogers also lost to Coon Rapids on Saturday and their season is over.
Cory Kaminsky was 3-for-4 with an RBI double for the Pioneers. Lance Johnson was 2-for-4 with a double, and he singled home the game-tying run in the eighth.
Rogers had a seven-run inning against Pipenagen, the Pioneer starter.
Brian McCallum pitched the distance for Rogers, which had just nine players.
