Tennis: Brandell-Larsen and Koehler-Kraljic are doubles champs at Elk River Open

Mitchel Brandell of Elk River’s state championship team joined with his sister’s college coach to win Open Doubles at the Elk River Open on Sunday.

Brandell, 2012 graduate of ERHS and co-captain of the 31-0 team this spring, and Scott Larsen won four matches, and capped it off with a 6-2, 6-2 conquest of Nick Scheevel and Joel Cassens in the finals of the 16-team tournament.

Larsen, who’s won numerous ERO titles over the years, coaches College of St. Benedict’s, where Allison Brandell plays. Scheevel is the Rogers boys coach. He and Cassens are both former Bethel players.

Meanwhile, former Elk  captains Leah Koehler and Camille Kraljic won women’s doubles, stopping Wendy Ames and Amy Keller in the finals 6-1, 6-2. Koehler, a 2011 graduate who plays for Winona State, also won singles on Saturday. Kraljic is a 2012 ERHS graduate. Their opponents were adult plays from Maple Grove.

Men’s “A” doubles were won by Big Lake teens Trevor and Cole Gratso. Cole is a 2012 graduate and Trevor will be a senior this fall.

The doubles action Sunday concluded three days of action in the 41st annual Elk River Open. The tournament had a total of 64 singles and 32 doubles entrants counting men and women. The director is Randy Ronning, Elk boys tennis coach, assisted by Curt Johnson.
