Sam and Lisa Scheevel cruised to the mixed doubles championship as the 41st annual Elk River Open tennis tournament opened Friday.

The Scheevels beat Chris and Logann Burns of Elk River in the first round, and Mike and Leah Koehler in the semifinals. Lisa Scheevel was ERO singles runner-up last year.
The Kreklau’s reached finals with a pair of close wins, 10-8 over Kent Nichols and Stephanie Brown of Bethel College, then 10-7 over Libby and Scott Storrick.
The Koehlers, a father-daughter team, with Leah a former Elk captain and current Winona State player, captured third place, beating the Storricks.
Nichols, former Elk No. 1 player who graduated from Bethel this year, and Brown picked up the consolation title.
A long day of singles competition is coming up Saturday beginning 8 a.m. Men’s and women’s doubles will be held Sunday.
