Waldo has been on the run in Zimmerman this month, and people have been out to catch sight of him in stores and shops around town. The Where’s Waldo in Zimmerman Scavenger Hunt is designed to help draw people to visit businesses during the heavy road construction on Fremont Avenue/County Road 4 that has torn up sections of the city’s main artery. So far, the hunt has been a resounding success.

Waldo was found at the city of Zimmerman’s entrance sign earlier this month. There will be a Where’s Waldo party at the conclusion of the scavenger hunt.

“This summer’s Where’s Waldo in Zimmerman Scavenger Hunt has been so much fun for all of us involved with it,” Sheri Olson, owner of Reading Frenzy BookShop, said, “and participating businesses have been very pleased with the number of people visiting their doors during the road construction.”

The hunt for Waldo began July 1 and will keep him on the run through the end of the month. To begin your own hunt, you need to pick up a search list from Reading Frenzy BookShop that has all the participating stores on it. Customers are then supposed to visit participating stores and find the Waldo figures hidden in plain sight somewhere in the aisles.

“We keep it fresh by keeping Waldo on the move after every time he’s been found,” Olson says, “so he’ll never be in the same place twice.”

Waldo even found his way over the road construction going on in Zimmerman.

Once found, customers get a card at the front to prove they found Waldo. For every business they visit and every Waldo they find, customers work towards winning great items. For starters, the first 100 people to collect eight cards win a “Where’s Waldo” button.

“Originally we were only going to have something for the first 100 people, but we’re running out of buttons so fast, that I commissioned professionally designed I Found Waldo in Zimmerman bookmarks once we breach the 100 mark,” Olson said, adding that her staff has already given out more than 110 search lists to kids, adults and families.

“Even in the 100-degree weather we were having, people were hitting the streets and walking to businesses to start their search for Waldo,” Olson says.

The Where’s Waldo in Zimmerman Scavenger Hunt culminates with the Where’s Waldo Party July 31 at 6 p.m., with a drawing that will declare the names of winners to receive door prizes. Customers who visit all 20 participating businesses in Zimmerman will also receive a mystery prize. The party will not be without tasty treats and, hopefully, a face-painter.
