Sherburne County Area United Way is sponsoring a UNITED WE DANCE event in the county.
The organization has 10 venues from Princeton, Zimmerman, Elk River and Big Lake who are partnering with it to do a Battle of the Bands July 28 from 8 to 11 p.m. The venue and band/DJ that raises the most funds for United Way that evening will be promoted on a billboard coming into Elk River after the event.
United Way is hosting a street dance down at River’s Edge Commons Park in downtown Elk River to be the “hub” of activity where announcements will be made on the half hour as to which venues are in the lead.
The musical guest will be Outdoor Recess, and food and beverages will be provided by McCoy’s Pub.
One of the members of Outdoor Recess is Rogers Elementary School Principal Phil Schreifels, who has been playing guitar and violin since the age of 10. He joined his first band in the eighth grade, according to his current band’s website.
He has played in a variety of bands, which include: rock bands, polka bands, country bands, pit orchestras and duos. He began college as a music major, but decided to pursue a teaching career instead. Throughout his years as an educator, he has enjoyed sharing his love of music with his students and now with his new circle of friends in the band, known as Outside Recess.
The street dance is not part of the competition, just the excitement. The winner of the Battle of the Bands will be announced at 11 p.m. at the conclusion of the street dance.
“We are excited about the partnerships within this event,” said Joy Nadeau, the executive director of the Sherburne County Area United Way. “The goal of the event is to raise ‘friends’ and awareness, and there is good energy as a result.”
