Dave Christensen of Elk River Golf Club tied for second place in the MGA State Amateur Tournament that concluded Wednesday.
Christensen, 35, a past State Am champion (1997), shot 71-72-73–216 at Hastings Country Club, three shots behind the champion. A customer service rep in the IT industry, Christensen placed sixth in the State Am last year and won the ERGC club title.
Frederick Van Rooyen, a Minnesota Gophers senior-to-be from South Africa, was champion with 72-68-73–213. He represented University/Les Bolstad Golf Club.
Tying for second with Christensen were Sammy Schmitz of Valleywood and Matt Schneider of Pokagama.
Colton Buege of Fox Hollow in Rogers tied for fifth place among 157 entrants. Buege, a Gophers teammate of Van Rooyen, shot 72-68-73–213, moving up from 43rd place last year.
Chase Hahne, 2011 ERHS graduate who red-shirted at North Dakota this year, tied for 38th place with 75-77-76–228.
The top 63 made the cut after two rounds. Among those missing the cut were Elk River’s Alex Kline, a 2012 graduate, with 82-73 and Nate Varty, a senior-to-be on the North Dakota State team, with 85-74. Kline placed 11th last year.
