The Elk River Farmers Market kicked off the season Thursday, June 28, in a new downtown Elk River location.
The market is operating out of a new parking lot at 716 and 720 Main, next to Elk River Meats. It will be there Thursdays from 2–6 p.m., through Oct. 4. There will not be a market July 5. In previous years it was in the Westbound Liquor parking lot.
The Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce and the city of Elk River held a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to mark the completion of the downtown parking lot and the start of the farmers market.
Stewart Wilson, chair of the Elk River Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA), said it’s all part of downtown revitalization efforts.
The new parking lot was designed with some amenities to make it more appealing than just a parking lot, and to dovetail with River’s Edge Commons Park across the street, Wilson said.
That’s why the parking lot is appointed with things like brick pavers and landscaping, he said.
He’s pleased that the farmers market has relocated downtown, and said it’s part of the overall mission to bring more people downtown.
Peterson Companies Inc. of Chisago City constructed the parking lot.
