Roger and Irene Kostreba have been named the city of Elk River’s Volunteer of the Month for June.
They were honored at the Monday, June 18 Elk River City Council meeting.
While both volunteer individually, Mayor John Dietz said their major volunteer accomplishments involve things they do together.
“They have put on the Community Christmas Dinner in Elk River for 23 years and counting, which is pretty amazing,” Dietz said. “They give up their Christmas every year to serve dinners to people that have no place to go or people that want a nice, hot meal on Christmas, which is great.”
The Kostrebas also are long-time members of the Sherburne County Fair Board, as vice president and treasurer. Roger has been active with the fair for 16 years and Irene, 15 years.
They volunteer more than 2,000 hours a year with the fair, Dietz said.
They also are Venture Crew adult volunteers, Boy Scout merit badge counselors and Elk River Saddle Club members.
Individually, Roger sings in the St. Andrew’s Choir, is a Cub Scout mentor, and an American Legion member and volunteer.
Irene is a Boy Scout committee chair, 4-H project leader, St. Andrew’s wedding coordinator and active in the Three Rivers Pony Club and Girl Scouts.
