Golf: Elk girls back in state tournament Tuesday, Wednesday

The Elk River girls golf team enters the state tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Bunker Hills as one of three returning from the 2011 state field, along with Wayzata and Stillwater, who finished 1-2 last year.

The other state teams are Red Wing, New Prague, Eastview, Blaine and Alexandria. Red Wing is ranked No. 1, Stillwater No. 2, and Eastview No. 3.

(Rankings compiled by the coaches association are based on season stroke averages).

Six of the top 10 individuals at last year’s meet return, including Elk River senior Sadie Martin, who placed eighth. The defending co-champions, Celia Kuenster of Cretin-Derham Hall and Cassie Deeg of Stillwater, return. Kuenster, a sophomore, is top-ranked with a 72.0 average.

The Elks lineup also includes seniors Ashlee Lindeen, Mary Elmquist and Alex McDonald, freshman Samantha Lindeen and eighth-grader Morgan Bleyhl.

The girls will start teeing off at 7:30 a.m.
