Michael “Mike” George Hayes, 47, of Big Lake, formerly of Elk River, died Sunday, May 27, 2012.
He was born April 19, 1965, to George and Audrey (Lindstrom) Hayes. He attended Elk River High School and graduated in 1983. He attended the University of Minnesota – Crookston, graduating with an associates degree in 1986. He began full-time farming at that time with his father, uncle and cousin. During the winters he attended St. Cloud State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Elective Studies degree in 1992.
Mr. Hayes enjoyed farming, vacationing with family and friends, motorcycle rides on his Boss Hoss and stopping to visit friends. He enjoyed NASCAR races on television, working on projects and seeing the finished result, serving his community and donating his time and talents to anyone who could benefit from them.
He was a member of the Clear Lake Lions, Big Lake Town Board, and served on many subcommittees, Sherburne County Planning Commission, Sherburne County Board of Adjustment, and has held positions on many farm-related boards over the years.
His funeral service was Saturday, June 2, at Saron Lutheran Church in Big Lake with the Rev. Kyle Sidlo officiating. Interment was private. Funeral arrangements were made with the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel of Monticello.
He is survived by his wife, Laura; sons, Brandon and Aaron of Big Lake; parents, George and Audrey Hayes of Elk River; brother, Matthew (fiancée Lisa); sister, Melissa (fiancé Todd); parents-in-law, Richard and Gloria Hensel of Big Lake; sisters-in-law, LeAnn (Kevin) Corbin and LaDonna (Paul) Braun, both of Big Lake; and seven nieces and nephews and many aunts and uncles.
