Track: Thunder’s Ortberg nabs state berth in long jump
The Zimmerman track team, competing in Class AA for the first time, had one state qualifier – Cassandra Ortberg – on the opening day of Section 7AA Wednesday, while scoring points in three other events.
Ortberg, a junior who’s gone to state in Class A twice, placed second in the long jump with a 17-2 1/4 effort at Princeton, trailing only Andover’s Karlie Hauer (17-7 1/4).
In preliminaries, Ortberg also advanced to Saturdays finals with third in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.
Thunder six-foot sophomore Brooke Borchardt scored points in two events, placing fifth in both the high jump with 4-10 and discus with 104-2.
Two Thunder senior boys placed in the shot put as Alec Seymour threw 52-9 for fourth and Ethan Lunning 52-0 for fifth. Andover’s Thomas Anderson won with 64-1/2.
With the top eight scoring, Thunder senior Anna Huss just missed in two events, placing ninth in long jump finals (16-2 3/4) and ninth in the 100 hurdles prelims.
Most of the finals will be held Saturday, beginning 11 a.m.
