Tennis: Elks have two doubles teams in 7AA semi’s, one singles player

Three of Elk River’s four entries in the Section 7AA individuals tennis tournament have reached the semifinals.

Josh Chuba in singles, and the doubles teams of Sam Gearou-Josh Gearou and Mitchel Brandell-Ryan Ness, all won quarterfinal matches on Tuesday at St. Francis.

Chuba, a junior, beat Austin Stefanich of Grand Rapids-Greenway 6-2, 6-4, and will face three-time state champion Dusty Boyer of Forest Lake in the semifinals Wednesday.

The Gearou twins, freshmen,  won 6-3, 6-0 over Joe Anderson and Adam Johnson of Hibbing, while seniors Brandell and Ryan ousted Duluth East’s Pedr Norr and Kevin Seiler 6-0, 6-4.

The two Elk doubles entrants will face each other in the semifinals on Wednesday.

The championship, third-place and (if needed) true- second matches will follow.

Elk senior Matt Odegard lost a close match to Hibbing’s Mike Fontana, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).
