Elk River’s two-year reign as Section 7AAA boys golf champion ended Monday but three Elks remain in the running for individual advancement.
The Elks placed fourth among nine teams at Grand National in Hinckley with the top three moving on the the final 18 on Thursday.
Elk senior Alex Kline, seeking his fourth straight trip to state, holds second place with 37-34-71. Cambridge-Isanti’s Matt Swanson leads with 70, and Forest Lake’s Max Kelly is third with 72.
Other Elks staying alive, by placing in the top 10 individuals not among team qualifiers, were freshman Garrett Turnacliff with 78 and senior Jordan Peterson with 82.
Mitch Nelson had the other counting score, 83, as the Elks shot 314 and missed the cutoff by two strokes.
Forest Lake has a big lead with 295, with Cambridge-Isanti (310) and Andover (312) also advancing.
The final 18 will be held Thursday starting 10 a.m.
