Thanks offered to Rep. Peppin
MCCL would like to thank Rep. Joyce Peppin for being the chief author of a bill that would require a physician to be physically present when administering an abortion-inducing drug such as RU486.
RU486 is a dangerous drug. When it was approved, the FDA required that only a physician could administer the drug—meaning that a person could not obtain it via a prescription or from a pharmacist. According to FDA guidelines, one must get the drug directly from a doctor, and then ingest it in the doctor’s presence.
In an effort to save money, some abortion facilities are skirting this requirement by only allowing women to talk with a doctor via a webcam. The physician is in a different city speaking to the woman through a secure video connection. The physician cannot even provide a woman with a physical examination prior to administering the dangerous RU486 drug.
Rep. Peppin’s bill would have changed this unsafe practice. Whether pro-life or pro-choice, Rep. Peppin’s constituents should thank her for her efforts to protect women. — Leo LaLonde, president, Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life
