The Zimmerman golfers finished second in the Granite Ridge Conference, and had two of the top three individuals in Tommy Hannan and Derek Faulkner, as the GRC season closed Monday at Wapicada in Sauk Rapids.
Season champion St. Cloud Cathedral won the meet with 328, followed by Little Falls 347 and Zimmerman 349.
Cathedral won five of the eight meets and Zimmerman won the other three in the inaugural golf season for this new conference.
Cathedral’s Pete Spethmann medaled at Wapicada with 76, followed by Mora’s Justin Kneiszler with 78 and Hannan with 81. Faulkner tied for eighth with 87.
Hannan and Spethmann tied for first place individually with 354 strokes and Faulkner, a junior, was next with 362.
“This was a very exciting award for Zimmerman and Tommy,” said Thunder coach Kurran Sagan. “He has had an outstanding year.”
Hannan and Faulkner made all-conference, while sophomore David Molinari placed eighth with 378 and got honorable mention.
Molinari shot 90 and Max McNulty 91 for the Thunder’s other counting scores.
Zimmerman was just two points behind Cathedral after winning the fourth, fifth and sixth GRC meets but finished third the last two.
“We will officially finish second in the conference, which is pretty rewarding for us,” said Sagan. “It would have been nice to finish strong in the last two conference meets to have a chance at first place, but Cathedral just played better.”
Next for Zimmerman is Section 6AA on June 4-5 at Blackberry Golf Club in Sartell.
