Golf: Thunder shoot well but GRC win streak ends

The Zimmerman golfers turned in another solid performance Thursday but two other teams were even  better as the Thunder’s bid for a conference championship was foiled.

St. Cloud Cathedral shot 155, Little Falls 157 and Zimmerman 158 to lead seven teams in the seventh of eight Granite Ridge Conference meets, at Stone’s Creek in Foley.

Zimmerman had won the previous three GRC meets and pulled within two points of Cathedral, the leader all year.

“We played well enough to win but Cathedral and Little Falls simply shot lower,” said coach Kurran Saggan. “It was our lowest team score of the year and we placed third. The conditions were good to shoot low and we didn’t shoot low enough.”

Now four points back with one GRC meet left (Monday at Wapicada), the Thunder will likely finish second “which is still pretty good,” then turn their focus to sectionals June 4.

Derek Faulkner shot 37, Max McNulty 39, Tommy Hannan 41, David Molinari 41, Dovian Sayre 42 and Cody Slocum 42 for the Thunder.

Peter Spethmann of Cathedral was low with 36.

Thunder 5th at Princeton InvitationalOn Monday, the Thunder placed fifth among seven teams at the Princeton Invitational, won by North Branch with 313. The Thunder totaled 332 led by Faulker with 78 and McNulty 81.
