City Council approves DNR grant application

The Elk River City Council has approved a resolution authorizing an application to be submitted for a grant of up to $75,000 to combat buckthorn in the city’s Woodland Trails Park.

The  Minnesota Department of Natural Resources grant would allow a woody bio-mass harvest to be implemented in the park as one step in addressing the buckthorn issue.

A full grant of $75,000 would clean up about 50 acres of the park, but more work would be needed in the future to control the problem.

“This first step is crossing the start line of not a sprint but a marathon.Follow-up management is a must,” said Gina Hugo, a resource conservationist with the Sherburne Soil and Water Conservation District.
