Softball: Royals lose to Champlin Park 15-10, face them again Monday in playoffs

When the Rogers Royals closed the regular season against Champlin Park on Thursday at home, both teams had good reason not to throw their No. 1 pitcher. It turns out they’ll face each other again Monday in the section opener.

The result was 15-10 merry-go-round won by the Rebels  after an eight-run first inning that included two home runs by Savannah Robinson. She blasted a solo and three-run shot and would finish 4-for-5.

Champlin Park (12-6) is seeded No. 7 and Rogers (11-9) is No. 10 among 12 teams in Section 5AAA, which is mostly teams from the Northwest Suburban Conference. They’ll meet 4 p.m. Monday at Rice Creek Park in Shoreview.

Eighth-grader Kate Kemmetmueller pitched for Rogers rather than senior No. 1 Christina Hajder.

Hajder smacked a three-run double for the Royals. Courtney Reinitz was 2-for-4 (RBI),  Madi Mikolich 2-for-3 and Megan Sharp 2-for-4.

The Royals lost their conference finale Tuesday when Kemmetmueller hit a batter with bases loaded and an 0-2 count in the last of the seventh with one out. She had a good relief stint otherwise, giving up one run in three innings after the Bluejackets scored eight runs of Hajder.  Reinitz was 2-for-4 with a solo  homer, Kemmetmueller 2-for-3 (two RBI), Hajder 2-for-4 (RBI) and Jo Baker 2-for-4.

Reinitz drove home the game-winner in the last of the seventh on Monday with a single that scored Abbie Lien, who singled and stole second with one out. Hajder pitched the distance, giving up nine hits, striking out nine. Lien was 2-for-3 (two runs) and Kemmetmueller 2-for-3 (RBI).

The Royals finished 6-6 in the Mississippi 8, tying for third place.
