The Elk River girl golfers had a very satisfying tournament Thursday, finishing back a ways but beating two of their top rivals at the Andover Invitational, even without their No. 1 player.
“We did pretty good!” said coach Dave Bleyhl. “We didn’t have Sadie today but we still finished sixth or seventh (among 16 teams) and beat Blaine and Grand Rapids.”
The Elks scored 364 on the Bunker Hills course in Coon Rapids, led by Ashlee Lindeen with 85. Samantha Lindeen turned in a 90, Morgan Blehyl 94 and Alex McDonald 95.
Martin, their longtime No. 1, was absent to take an AP English test.
Red Wing took the team title with 346, and New Prague’s McKenzie Neesen, who’s won multiple tournaments, was on top again with 75.
Blaine is the Elks’ top conference rival and recently ended an almost four-year conference win streak by the Elks. They’ll duel again in the conference tournament May 25. Grand Rapids is a perennial power in the Elks’ section.
The Elks will play at the Staples-Motley Invitational on Saturday with a young lineup as the older girls have prom.
