Baseball: Royals tip Hornets on sac fly in 8th inning, 6-5

The Rogers Royals tripped Big Lake 6-5 in eight innings Thursday, getting the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Halseth.

Royal senior Andrew Smith was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and two RBI, and picked up the save with a 1-2-3 eighth in his first mound appearance of the year.

Scott Neubauer threw six solid innings (four runs, two earned, four strikeouts). Blake Shermer gave up the tying run in the last of the seventh and wound up getting his first win (against three loses) as the Royals regained the lead in the eighth.

Neal Smith was 3-for-4 for Rogers (4-6 conference, 6-9 overall). Austin Barbeln was 2-for-4 (RBI, double, two runs) and Ryan Gelle 1-for-3 (RBI).

Jake Neidenfeuhr pitched 6 1/3 innings for Big Lake (4-6, 5-9) and Jake Geroux took the loss in relief.

Rogers will host Monticello on Monday.
