College athletes: Jesperson led Augustana tennis to nationals

The Augustana tennis team led by Katie Jesperson, sophomore from Elk River, won the NSIC title and was top-seeded in the NCAA-II national tournament but was upset by Colorado Mesa 5-4 on their home court  at Sioux Falls in the semifinals April 29.

Jesperson won at 1-singles and lost at 1-doubles in close matches. The Vikings finished 18-4. Jesperson was 14-3 in singles and 14-7 in doubles wit Michelle Wadas. She made first-team all-NSIC.

Dannie Skrove, Minnesota Gophers senior outfielder from Zimmerman, is batting .281 (16-for-57) with 11 runs, 11 RBI, a homer and three doubles in 29 games. The former Elk River shortstop missed 21 games of her final season with an injury. Skrove has  batted .165, .202 and .248 her first three seasons so she’s on pace for a career best. The Gophers are 9-12 in the BIg Ten and 30-20 overall.

Keagan Blancke, Northwestern College junior tennis player from Elk River, was named UMAC player of the week each of the last two weeks after remaining unbeaten in conference singles play. He is 11-6 overall for the season in both singles and doubles.

Kayti Hanson, freshman from Elk River, starts at second base on the Division I Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne softball team that’s 42-12 heading into post-season. Hanson is hitting .277 with 28 runs and 14 RBI, and has a .958 fielding percentage with seven double plays.

Cassandra Brown, sophomore from Elk River, was named second-team all-NSIC in tennis. Brown was 9-18 at No. 1 singles and 17-11 at No. 1 doubles., Winona State tennis player from Elk River, was named NSIC freshman  of the year, after posting a 16-1 singles record and 14-3 in doubles. In conference she was 9-0 in singles and 7-2 in dubs with Laura Roesslein.
