With Tommy Hannan and Derek Faulkner both in the 70’s, the Zimmerman Thunder won their second straight Granite Ridge Conference meet on Monday at Princeton Golf Club.
The Thunder shot 327, edging league leader St. Cloud Cathedral by one stroke. Little Falls was next with 334.
Hannan wast 3-over-par at 75 to share the meet medal with St. Cloud Cathedral’s Peter Spethmann. Faulkner placed third with 78. David Molinari shot 84 (tying for eighth) and Adam Fordahl 90 for the other counting score.
“This is the first meet in Zimmerman Thunder history to have two players shoot in the 70s,” noted coach Kurran Sagan. That’s another “first” after they won their first tournament last Thursday, a nine-hole GRC meet at Little Falls with 166.
Cathedral has 33 points and Zimmerman 30 to lead the seven-team conference after five of eight conference meets. The Thunder will probably have to win the rest to finish first or share the title.
“Our guys are playing with a ton of confidence and it feels possible,” said Kurran. “Our guys are now going into events knowing they have a chance to win by shooting low. It’s a fun position to be in for a second-year program.”
The next GRC meet is Thursday in Milaca.
