Golf: Thunder capture first tourney win, edging Cathedral at GRC meet

The Zimmerman Thunder golfers picked up their first-ever tournament victory on Thursday, edging St. Cloud Cathedral by two strokes in a Granite Ridge Conference meet at Little Falls.

“Our guys were very excited,” said coach Kurran Sagan.  “We are starting to have three, four or five guys play well in the same meet to help lower our team scores. ”

Thunder senior Tommy Hannan and junior Derek Faulker each shot 39 to place second behind Princeton’s Conner Whitcomb, who had 38.

Zimmerman’s other counting scores were Dovian Sayre’s 43 and  David Molinari’s 45. Right behind were Max McNulty 47 and Corey Foyt 49.

The Thunder shot 166, Cathedral 148, Princeton 171, Milaca 173, Little Falls 174, Foley 190, and Mora 192.

“Tommy and Derek are gaining more and more confidence with every meet and we got a great contribution from Dovian tonight,” said the coach.

Cathedral, the conference season leader, was led by Peter Spethmann and Sam Labine with 41′s.

Zimmerman, a second-year program, placed fourth, second, and second (tied) in three previous conference meets. Two more meets remain in the inaugural season of the new GRC.

“We are still 2nd behind Cathedral,” said Saggan, “but we are hoping tonight and a couple more meets like this will give us a chance to over take them.”

Next conference meet will be Thursday at Milaca.
