Golf: Blaine ends Elk girls’ four-year conference win streak

For the first time in almost four years, the Elk River girls golf team has lost a conference match.

The Blaine Bengals, led by two home-schooled sisters, tripped the Elks 169 to 177 at Majestic Oaks on Wednesday

“Blaine shot really well, and we hit pretty well but our putting was really bad,” said Elk coach Dave Bleyhl.

Blaine’s Hannah Andrews, a junior, and Caroline Andrews, a freshman, both shot 41, low for the meet.

For the Elks, Sadie Martin had 43, Ashlee Lindeen 44, Alex McDonald 44, and Mary Elmquist 45.

The Elks won all their conference duals and the conference 18-hole tournament in 2009, 2010, and 2011, and were 7-0 in conference this year prior to this. Blaine is unbeaten in conference.

If the Elks win their last conference dual, against Armstrong, they can still pull out the championship at the 18-hole, full conference meet May 25 at Bunker Hills.

“We’d have to beat them on both nines, but we can do it if we play well,” said the coach.

Next meet is the Alexandria Invitational on Saturday.
