The Zimmerman golf team is holding second place in the Granite Ridge Conference after three meets in which the Thunder have placed second twice and fourth once.
“We have been improving with every tournament we have played,” said coach Kurran Sagan about his second-year program. “We are getting more and more consistent golf from all six varsity players.”
In GRC meets so far, the Thunder placed fourth at Foley with 168 on April 12, second at Elk River Golf Club (their home meet) with 165 on April 18, and tied for second at Mora with 340 for 18 holes on April 25.
St. Cloud Cathedral leads the seven-school, first-year conference.
“Standing second currently in our conference is encouraging,” said Saggan. “Our goal is to beat St. Cloud Cathedral in at least one conference match and close the gap.”
The Thunder competed in the Mississippi 8 last year, their inaugural season, finishing eighth.
Tommy Hannan earned the ZHS program’s first medal with 36 at the April 12 meet, tying Cathedral’s Sam LaBine.
In other outings, Zimmerman placed last among seven teams at the Andover Invitational with 361 at Bunker Hills on April 10, eighth among 15 at at the Pre-Section 6AA meet at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell (hosted by Albany) with 361 on April 23, 13th among 18 at the Brainerd Invitational at The Preserve in Pequot Lakes with 332 on April 26, and seventh among 13 at the Purple Hawk Invitational in Cambride with 332 on April 30.
Hannan, who shot 78 at the Purple Hawk, leads the squad with an 83.83 average, followed by David Molinari with 85.62, Derek Faulkner with 87.16, and Max McNulty with 88.66.
