I thought it was interesting that John Dietz commented in last week’s edition of the Star News about incomplete coverage of the joint meeting regarding cooperation between the county and city. When it comes to reporting news of the county, school district and city, the Star is often like the Platte River, a mile wide and an inch deep. There is an alternative source for those who would like more information and the added opportunity to complain, praise, inquire or get action on some issue or problem within the city. On the first Saturday of each month at the Elk River American Legion post from 9 to 10 a.m., the mayor recaps the previous month’s happenings in the city, allowing plenty of time for questions and answers.
It is a unique opportunity to have access to the mayor in an informal setting. More often than not the mayor will bring another representative from the city with him. In the past we have heard from the police chief, public works director and the parks and recreation director. Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott and other county personnel have said they would be glad to attend with the mayor in the future. This meeting is for the public, thanks to the mayor’s generosity and the Elk River American Legion post. Coffee and doughnuts are available. I hope you will consider attending. — Pete Kimball, Elk River
