Sportech is expanding into a former furniture store in Elk River.

The company has purchased the vacant Maxsun Lighting and Furniture building at 11074 179th Ave., just south of The Home Depot. Sportech intends to convert the 50,000-square-foot building into a light manufacturing and warehouse space.

Sportech has closed on the deal and is prepping the building for operations, said Jim Glomstad, Sportech general manager.

The company needs more space due to general industry growth that has impacted Sportech in a positive way as well as broader customer diversification, he said.

The former Maxsun building is located near Sportech’s main facility at 10800 175th Ave., Elk River.

Founded in 1994, Sportech is a supplier of OEM thermoformed plastic products to the powersports industry.

To allow the Sportech expansion to proceed, the Elk River City Council voted unanimously April 16 to rezone the former Maxsun parcel from planned unit development to business park. Both manufacturing and warehousing are appropriate land uses in the business park zone, according to Elk River Planning Manager Jeremy Barnhart.

The southern 60 percent of the lot was originally zoned business park, but was rezoned in 2004 to accommodate the retail sales associated with Maxsun Furniture, according to Barnhart.

Mayor John Dietz thanked Sportech’s owner and president, Chris Carlson, for expanding the business in Elk River.
