Police Report: Explosive fire destroys Otsego garage, camper

A Wright County sheriff’s deputy awoke an Otsego couple Wednesday night to the

Elk River fire, with assistance from Albertville fire, battled this garage fire for five hours on Wednesday night.

A neighbor called 911 after seeing the fire, alerting the deputy and Elk River fire at 9:01 p.m., according to Elk River Fire Chief John Cunningham.

Elk River fire arrived to find the garage fully engulfed and spent the next five hours knocking the fire down and putting out hot spots in the unattached garage at 8074 Needham Ave.

The garage and its contents were a total loss, including a camper. Firefighters had to contend with a number of explosive materials including gas tanks, propane and acetylene that set off explosions heard throughout the neighborhood.

Firefighters were able to keep the home from burning, but there was water and heat damage and slight fire damage done to the home, Cunningham said.

The origin and cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The same is true of another garage fire that happened that same night in the 800 block of Upland Avenue in Elk River.

Elk River fire was called there at 8:32 p.m. The fire started outside of the garage and did some damage to the eaves and soffit.

This fire was the second of three the department responded to that day. The first was a small grass fire off 192nd Avenue by the railroad tracks that the department was dispatched to shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Elk River fire called in Albertville fire on the Otsego garage fire. They cleared that fire at about 2 a.m. April 5.

Drunk driver vomits  in car and on self
A 21-year-old Forest Lake woman was arrested April 1 after a Sherburne County deputy reported a possible impaired driver on westbound Highway 10. The deputy stopped the vehicle and found the driver had vomited all over the interior of her vehicle and herself. The woman was arrested for fourth degree DWI.

Vacant home believed to be burglarized
Police took a report March 31 from the 11600 block of 198th Avenue that some property was missing from a vacant home. A person working on the property reported that a trailer and a generator were missing. It was unknown if the owner had taken the items or if a burglary had occurred.

Garage left open found ripped off
A 26-year-old Elk River man reported that his overhead garage door was left open and that someone entered the garage in the 17000 block of Grant Street and stole miscellaneous tools totaling nearly $5,000.

Elk River man reports golf clubs stolen
A 23-year-old Elk River man reported that a set of golf clubs were taken from a garage in the 11000 block of 193rd Avenue.

Hillside Park reports illegal off-road bikes
Staff at Hillside Park reported on March 31 that several people had off-road motorcycles near the front of the park. They had left prior to the arrival of police.

Warning issued to Elk River ATV operator
A 45-year-old Elk River man was warned for ATV violations in the 20400 block of Meadowvale Road April 1.
