College athletes: Indiana’s Ryan places 8th, 12th in NCAA diving

Laura Ryan, Indiana sophomore diver from Elk River, qualified for nationals in all three dives. She finished eighth in 3-meter and 12th in 1-meter, and had to withdraw from platform after prelims due to a minor injury. Ryan and teammate Amy Coznad, who placed 12th in synchro diving at the world meet in London on February, will compete in an international meet at Fort Lauderdale in May.

Andrea Dwyer, freshman from Elk River, is a member of the Concordia-St. Paul golf team. She’s played in four of the team’s 14 rounds so far, averaging 97.8.

Hannah Sweet, sophomore from Elk River on the UW-Stout softball team, is hitting .302 with eight RBI in 14 games, playing mostly third base but also first base and DH. She was a catcher for the Elks. The Bluedevils are 8-8.

Lynk Downing, former Zimmerman kicker, has made the football roster at the University of North Dakota and is competing for a job in spring practice. The spring game will be held April 25. Downing was  in football, soccer and track at ZHS.

Katie Jesperson, Augustana tennis sophomore No. 1 player from Elk River, is 15-3 in singles and 11-6 in doubles. The Viking (15-3) will host St. Cloud on April 14 where she’ll face former Elk teammate Cassandra Brown.

Jamie Klein, UW-River Falls softball senior from Elk River, is hitting .217  in 10 games, and has a 3.50 ERA in six innings as a relief pitcher. The Falcons are 8-5.
