Jerome Allen “Jerry” Opay, 84 of Buffalo, formerly of Elk River, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born May 6, 1927, in Milwaukee, Wis. to Frank and Mary (Belak) Opay. Mr. Opay served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On June 30, 1945, he married Nellie Agnes Swanson. He worked as a carpenter for many years and retired from Bemis Co. in Minneapolis in 1987.
Mr. Opay, a man of many talents, loved hunting, fishing, gardening and canning. He played many instruments, wrote and composed his own songs and loved listening to bluegrass and country Gospel.
The funeral service was Wednesday, March 28 at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel in Monticello. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery, Nowthen.
Mr. Opay is survived by his children, Loreen (Robert) Steinhaus, Jerry (Mary), Mary (David) Kolles, Frank (Joan), Verona (Robert) Dugas, Timothy’s wife Kathy Opay, Eveleen (Mark) Kohnen, Mark, Matthew (Sally Blair), Michael (Beverly), Theresa (Duane) Bistodeau, Carolyn (Raymond) Varner, and Jennifer (Travis) Jacobsen; 37 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Nellie; son, Timothy; and granddaughter, Sonya.
