Elk River’s Farmers Market will be moving to downtown this summer.
The market will be located in the vacant space next to Elk River Meats that was created when two buildings at 716 and 720 Main St. were demolished by the city in January. A consultant is working on plans now for a parking lot with amenities in the space. The goal is to finish the parking lot by opening day of the Farmers Market — June 28.
The Farmers Market had been located in the parking lot of Westbound Liquor in Elk River.
“I have heard a lot of positive comments of having the Farmers Market downtown,” said Stephanie Albin, recreation coordinator with the city of Elk River. “I feel the move to downtown will generate more traffic to the Farmers Market and to the downtown businesses.”
The Farmers Market will also have new hours, from 2-6 p.m. Thursdays. It will run weekly through Oct. 4 with the exception of July 5.
The city is still accepting vendors of fresh fruit and vegetables and homemade goods. For more information, download a Farmers Market packet on the city website at www.ci.elk-river.mn.us/parksandrec.
The Farmers Market is sponsored by The Bank of Elk River.
Learn about geocaching
The Farmers Market will be the place to learn more about geocaching this year.
The Elk River Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting mini-lessons at the Farmers Market regarding a new program, “Show Me the Cache~ Geocaching” that the department, along with collaborative efforts with The Bank of Elk River, will be launching this summer.
Albin said it will be a great way for people to learn more about geocaching.
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices, she said.
“It’s a great way to explore locations near and far using technology with outdoor adventure,” she said.
The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Caches may also contain items for trade, but the journey is discovering a geocache. Anyone can use coordinates found on Geocaching.com to locate geocaches.
