Elk River’s Junior Gold hockey team has qualified for the “B” level state tournament after four region wins that earned them a No. 1 seed at state.
Elk River will take a 19-9-2 record into state March 15-16-17-19 at Plymouth Ice Arena, opening against Edina. Coached by Dave Hansen and Matt James, they placed eighth in league play but had a 4-0 mark in the 33-team regionals, including a win over top-ranked Roseville.
Shane Loreno, Jake Johnson and Austin Linn are the co-captains. Johnson and Jake Rice split goal-tending duties. Top scorers are Kyle Forster, Jake Knopick, Alex Stull, Wyatt Hansen and Travis Hansen.
Junior Gold is a program for students in grades 10-12 as an alternative to the high school team. There are three levels of state tournaments — A, B, and U165.
