Nile “Dean” Mealhouse, 84, of Elk River, died peacefully with his wife, Betty, and family members at his side Sunday, March 4, 2012, in McAllen, Texas.
He was born to Vernon and Mary Mealhouse on Sept. 17, 1927, in the same farmhouse as his father and three older brothers before him, in Garrison, Iowa. His boyhood years were on the farm in Iowa, but when World War II broke out, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
He married Betty Lois Winkler of Minneapolis on Nov. 21, 1945.
Mr. Mealhouse was employed by the Anoka County Highway Department, and prior to that time, was a homebuilder.
He was a talented woodworker, and spent many hours in his workshop, making furniture, cabinetry and other creations.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, to be announced, at the Nowthen Alliance Church in Nowthen. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Mayo Clinic Foundation, Rochester, Minn.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, and children, Mary Erickson (Joel), Cindy Hultquist (Tim), Sherry Buttweiler (Rudy), and Kevin Mealhouse (Claire); daughter-in-law, Carol; 13 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Mealhouse was predeceased by his son, Bob, in 1998.
